A beautiful Saturday morning awaited us, cool yet sunny as we rocked up to the pitch to see the Men's 2s in action. I learned the score was already 3-1. Apparently Adam Cole made an uncharacteristic error on the halfway line, passing it backward which a Cheshunt forward sprang on and led to an opening goal.
Twos 0 - 1 Cheshunt
Coley's catastrophic error did not turn out to be a, erm, catastrophe, as it ignited the fire within the bellies of the Twos, it didn't take long for an opportunity to present itself to Charlie K who made a dashing run to the by line, pulled it back for a smart finish.
Twos 1 - 1 Cheshunt
Coley then made up for his earlier snafoo with a brilliant slap from a short corner to establish a rightly deserved lead.
Twos 2 - 1 Cheshunt
Choo-choo the train is in full flow now. Russell Timms was not just "On the pitch" but paid attention to Charlie K's goal from earlier and produce an exquisite carbon copy.
Twos 3 - 1 Cheshunt
The start of the second half is always a bit dicey when you are two goals ahead, it's really important to get the next goal to ensure the game is out of reach... the tsunami of on-rushing Harpenden forwards was clearly too much for the Cheshunt defence. The goal, scored by none other than Captain Jack Russell, his first for Harpenden I'm told. Quite why he was so high up the pitch playing at left back is unknown, must be a new attacking style of play, maybe he's been watching Roberto Carlos vids on youtube? Any way Jack collected a poor clearance, and flicked the ball over the diving keeper into the sideboard. (i actually saw this one and can confirm the celebration was very much Alan Shearer-esque)
Twos 4 - 1 Cheshunt
Four's a good tally, five's even better. Henry's probably too young to remember 5ive, however when their keeper saved a shot he kept on movin' and superbly flicked the ball home.
Full Time Twos 5 - 1 Cheshunt
Well played boys - was nice to have something positive to write about...
... the ones i hear you ask? Well we lost 1-0, as you can probably read from the score at the top of the page. I'm not one to point fingers but, the Ones defence let in as many goals as the Twos defence did (I think you can all see where I'm going with this line...)
Unfortunately, to use a word coined in the last decade, our performance was just a bit "meh". We seemed to struggle to get the ball out of defence, find it easy to lose possession, and have plenty of lethargy across the field. It was deflating but oh well, we go again next week and will try our best for an improved result against Old Loughts.
There's probably some data law against injury descriptions etc, so I'll anonymise this bit. But if you know of any defenders they may come in useful. One person in training kicked the ball, twice, and now has a gangrenous foot, another a groin injury sustained in the evening hours, then in the match we suffered a shoulder subluxation and a pulled/strained back. All this meant I was on the pitch for far too long, am pretty tired and hope my brothers at the back recover quickly.
What I don't need to anonymise is the cards situation. Dom picked up a green for gently touching the oppo, George picked up a green for an offence I can't recall - I'm sure he deserved it though.
Next week: less injuries, more goals.
